General introduction: The Hainan Refinery Wastewater Treatment Plant handles two types of wastewater: oil-containing wastewater and saline wastewater. Oil-containing wastewater is treated using the MBR process, while saline wastewater is treated using the oxidation ditch process. Saline wastewater includes effluent from crude oil dehydration and spent caustic wastewater, both of which are characterized by high salinity and high COD. Consequently, the quality of saline wastewater is complex and highly variable, making it difficult to treat. Under the combined influence of these two streams, the effluent quality from the oxidation ditch consistently fails to meet regulatory standards. In addition, the plant has undertaken a new p-xylene project, which will generate p-xylene production wastewater and increase the processing load on the saline wastewater treatment system. To stabilize the saline wastewater treatment system, the Hainan Refinery Wastewater Treatment Plant carried out an optimization and reconstruction of the saline wastewater pretreatment system in 2013, with a primary focus on mitigating the adverse impacts of these two wastewater streams on the saline wastewater treatment process.
