Definition
A Membrane Bio-Reactor (MBR) is a novel, highly efficient wastewater treatment process that integrates advanced membrane separation technology with the conventional activated sludge method. In MBR systems, the secondary sedimentation tank used in traditional biological treatment is replaced by a membrane module.
Classification
According to the membrane module placement method, MBR can be divided into: split type and integrated membrane bio-reactor.
Based on oxygen requirements, MBRs can be classified as aerobic or anaerobic membrane bioreactors.
Specialty
Outlet water quality is stable.
High sludge concentration, high biodegradability, strong resistance to shock loads, and efficient membrane separation ensure the stability of MBR systems in terms of disinfection, suspended solids removal, and BOD reduction. In particular, MBR is highly effective at removing refractory organics and reducing ammonia nitrogen.
Small footprint
The sludge concentration is high, with an MLSS of approximately 8–20 g/L—about 2.5 to 5 times that of conventional biochemical treatment—and the volume of the biochemical tank is relatively small.
Simple operation and maintenance
The process is simple, with effluent quality and operation unaffected by factors such as sludge bulking, making automated control and management easy to implement.
Less sludge
The sludge concentration is high, the sludge retention time is long, the sludge output is only 10% of that in conventional processes, and the post-treatment cost of the sludge is low.
