Based on the manufacturing process, industrial water is primarily categorized into production water, auxiliary production water, and affiliated production water. According to varying water quality requirements, industrial water can be further classified into pure water (such as desalinated water and distilled water), softened water (hardness-removed water), clarified water (natural water or water treated by coagulation, clarification, and filtration), cooling water, and other types.
Industrial water treatment technologies encompass coagulation–sedimentation, clarification, filtration, adsorption, ion exchange, membrane separation, and more. However, no single treatment method or unit can fully meet actual water quality requirements.
